Overview:

  Spain

The Spanish electricity market consumes 184 TWh annually whilst exporting and importing 6 TWh and 11 TWh respectively. Spain’s electricity is generated through a combination of nuclear power responsible for 37% of electricity generation, whereas nuclear power is responsible for 45% and hydro electric power responsible for 18% of electricity generation.

Eligibility - 5 GWh as of 1st Jan 1999, lowered to 1 GWh in Oct 1999 representing 46% of the market or over 9000 customers. July 2000 all high voltage (1 kV) customers were eligible i.e. 54% of the market or 61,000 customers. There is to be full market opening before 2007. It is estimated that >5% of large industrial users have switched suppliers in the Spanish market each year, this could be as much as 10% of national demand in Spain.

The Iberian market, like Italy, is still relatively isolated from the rest of Europe, however many European suppliers have bought a market share in Spanish suppliers, and competition is gaining momentum. Why not take advantage of EnergyQuote’s expertise in this isolated market place?
